An 84-year-old male with a 50-pack-year smoking history returns for 6-week postoperative follow-up complaining of persistent left hip pain and difficulty ambulating following prophylactic intramedullary nailing of his left femur. Two months prior, radiographs of his left proximal femur revealed the pathologic lesion demonstrated in Figure A. Staging at that time revealed a 5-mm lung nodule. Prostate specific antigen, serum protein electrophoresis, and urine protein electrophoresis were within normal limits.
