A 60-year-old female presents to your office for evaluation of her left shoulder. An MRI has been performed which shows a small full-thickness rotator cuff tear of the supraspinatus tendon. She has been treated by her local primary care sports medicine physician with repeat corticosteroid injections into the shoulder. She states that she has had approximately 6 injections in total with the most recent being one week ago. She reports that they are no longer effective and would like to discuss rotator cuff surgery. How should this patient be counseled if surgery was to proceed 3 months from now?
