Biography

Dr. Hecht is the Chief of Spine Surgery for the Mount Sinai Health System and Chief of Spine Surgery at the Mount Sinai Hospital. He also serves as Director of the Spine Center of Mount Sinai Doctors, the Faculty Practice, and Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and of Neurologic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Hecht is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Harvard Medical School as well as a trauma fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Hecht completed a Spine Surgery Fellowship at Emory University Spine Center. Dr. Hecht holds dual appointments in orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery. He is the spine surgical consultant to the New York Jets, New York Islanders, and New York Dragons professional teams, as well as numerous collegiate teams at Hofstra University and Molloy College. Dr. Hecht is the Director of the NFL Spine Care Program for retired players at Mount Sinai (one of five sites across the country) and is the only orthopaedic spine surgeon in the northeast to be a part of this program. He also directs the acute spinal injury program for the NY Jets. Dr. Hecht is only one of two orthopaedic surgeons of the NFL Brain and Spine Committee. Dr. Hecht was selected for NY Magazine's Top Doctors. He was also selected by the prestigious Castle and Connolly's Top Doctors for the New York Metro Area for Orthopaedic Spine Surgery as well as Castle Connolly's "Top Doctors in America" for Orthopaedic Spine Surgery. In addition, he was selected as "Top Physician" for Spine Surgery by the Consumer Research Council of America. He was also elected to the NY Times Super Doctors as well as Best Doctors in America. Upon completing his spine fellowship at Emory University Spine Center, Dr. Hecht returned to Boston and joined the faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Most recently, he was the founder and Medical Co-Director of The Newton-Wellesley Spine Center and the Director of the Spine Surgery Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Hecht's clinical interests include cervical and lumbar spine surgery, the evaluation and surgical management of degenerative disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine (such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis), minimally invasive spine surgery, microsurgery, spine trauma and tumors. Dr. Hecht is a nationally recognized leader in spine surgery. He has authored numerous articles and contributed to numerous textbooks in the field of spine surgery. His research has been presented at numerous national meetings. He often serves on the faculty of courses to teach the newest surgical techniques to other spine surgeons. He also serves on the editorial review board of one of the most prestigious spine surgery journals. Dr. Hecht is a member of the North American Spine Society and the prestigious Cervical Spine Research Society.
