Biography

Michael C. Willey, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in treating hip conditions in adolescents and young adults, including dysplasia, impingement, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, Perthes disease, fracture, deformity, and arthritis. He also treats traumatic injuries of the pelvis and extremities. He founded the University of Iowa Young Adult Hip Clinic with fellow UI orthopedic surgeon Robert Westermann, MD, the only comprehensive hip preservation clinic in Iowa. His research focuses on interventions to improve function and pain for adolescents and young adults with hip dysplasia. The UI Young Adult Hip Clinic team has multiple ongoing prospective studies designed to improve outcomes of non-surgical and surgical treatment of hip conditions. Additionally, he has ongoing research studies assessing nutrition interventions to preserve muscle and improve physical function after surgical treatment. Dr. Willey received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, his medical degree, and completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery from the University of Iowa. He also completed a fellowship in orthopedic trauma at the University of Iowa.
