Dr. Poelstra completed medical school at the University of Groningen in his native country, The Netherlands and successfully completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering in collaboration with a research Institute in Northern Virginia. He then moved to Charlottesville, VA, to complete his Orthopedic Residency at The University of Virginia, followed by a prestigious Orthopedic- and Neurological Spine Fellowship at The Rothman Institute (Thomas Jefferson University) in Philadelphia, PA. He then worked for 4 years at Shock Trauma in Baltimore as an Assistant Professor @ the University of Maryland, followed by establishing a very successful Spine Institute in Destin, FL, As a pioneer in Robotic Spine Surgery, he founded The Robotic Spine Institute of Silicon Valley in 2019, and now brings all of this cutting edge expertise to Nevada at The Robotic Spine Institute of Las Vegas @ Allegiant Spine and Pain. Dr. Poelstra specializes in long-construct minimally invasive- and robotic spine surgeries, adult spinal deformity, complex revision surgeries, oncologic conditions and disc replacements. Dr. Poelstra also has an extensive background in research on techniques in preventing surgical site infections and development of novel implant material and -of course- robotics. He is widely published and helped develop numerous key advancements in current surgical treatments of spinal pathologies, such as intra-operative robots and has performed more robotic surgeries than any other surgeon in the world.
