Remko Sonnega studied medicine at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam. He completed his training as an orthopedic surgeon at the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Spaarnegasthuis in Hoofddorp and the Northwest Hospital in Alkmaar. During this training he learned, among other things: specialized in the placement of hip prostheses via the anterior approach. After his training, he further specialized in the field of hip surgery in the full range. This hip fellowship within the Rijnstate hospital (under the leadership of Dr de Visser) focused, among other things, on keyhole operations of the hip (hip arthroscopy), primary hip prostheses (artificial hips) and re-operations after a previous hip prosthesis (revision surgery). Afterwards he started the arthroplasty fellowship at the St Maartenskliniek (under the leadership of Dr van Hellemondt). This meant that he further developed in the field of hip and knee prostheses and re-operations after previously placed prostheses (revision operations). He performed more than 150 of these revision operations that year). The St Maartenskliniek and Dr van Hellemondt are national and international leaders in this. Since March 1, 2019, Remko Sonnega has been working as an orthopedic surgeon at the Clinic for Movement Care in Rijswijk.
