Biography

Walter Virkus, MD, is the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Virkus worked in Chicago as a member of the orthopedic department at Rush University Medical Center. During that time, he also served as an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and chairman of orthopedics at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, former Cook County Hospital. Dr. Virkus earned his medical degree from the New Jersey Medical School in Newark. He then completed a general surgery internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City and performed his orthopedic residency at the University of Maryland. Dr. Virkus completed trauma fellowships at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, followed by an orthopedic oncology fellowship at the University of Florida. Dr. Virkus has a diverse practice that includes orthopedic trauma, orthopedic oncology and hip reconstruction, He has a strong focus in treating nonunions (unhealed bones), orthopedic infections and hip osteotomies. He also specializes in using oncological techniques for trauma reconstructions and using trauma techniques for oncologic reconstructions. Dr. Virkus has been board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since 2002. He regularly participates in courses teaching orthopedic residents surgical techniques. He is on faculty for AO North America, a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the Musculoskeletal Tumors Society and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.
