Biography

Ms. Deepa Bose is a consultant in orthopaedic trauma and limb reconstruction at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where she has worked since 2009. Her practice is exclusively in adults, and includes general trauma, major trauma and post-traumatic limb reconstruction: osteomyelitis (bone infection), malunion (bones which have knitted in the wrong position), non-union (bones which have failed to knit), limb lengthening & deformity correction (not congenital). She qualified as a doctor from the University of Calcutta in 1990 and subsequently came to the UK for higher training. She passed the FRCS examination from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and then entered the Welsh regional training programme in Trauma & Orthopaedics. She passed the FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedics) examination in 2000, and was admitted to the specialist register of the General Medical Council. Upon completion of orthopaedic training, she underwent subspecialist training in bone infection and limb reconstruction at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, which houses the only dedicated Bone Infection Unit in the UK. Ms Bose also has a keen interest in medical education. She completed an MSc in Medical Education from Cardiff in 2010, and has been a regional training programme director for core surgery in West Midlands. She is currently Vice Chair of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Trauma & Orthopaedics, which is responsible for the curriculum and assessment of doctors undergoing specialist training in orthopaedics in the UK. Ms Bose has a desire to promote and encourage teaching in orthopaedics in developing nations, and she gained the Diploma in Medical Care of Catastrophes from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries in 2011. She is the Chairman of World Orthopaedic Concern UK, a specialist society of the British Orthopaedic Association, and a charity which focuses on teaching orthopaedics in low resource countries. She has been on the Emergency Response Team of UK Med, a first response team for international disaster relief, since 2012.
