Biography

Edward Rodriguez, MD, PhD, has been named Chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Starting September 1, Rodriguez will lead the department in patient care, research and training for orthopaedic and musculoskeletal issues. "We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Rodriguez, an outstanding surgeon, researcher and educator, into his new role," said Peter Healy, President of BIDMC. "We are confident that his thoughtful leadership and commitment to his patients, colleagues and mentees will further enhance BIDMC's mission of extraordinary patient supported by world class education and research." Rodriguez joined BIDMC in 2004 as Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Division of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Since 2016, he has also served as Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs of the Department and Chair of the Harvard Medical School Orthopaedic Trauma Initiative. Rodriguez is a highly dedicated and celebrated faculty mentor, having mentored many medical students, residents and young orthopaedic surgeons. He is very active in professional societies and an accomplished researcher. His primary research interests are the management of fracture non-unions, the development of new therapies for the management of arthrofibrosis and the creation of new technologies for implant infection and fracture prevention. “I am honored to continue working alongside my long-time friends and colleagues in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery,” said Rodriguez. “For the last 16 years, we have worked together building our present department under the direction of Dr. Gebhardt. I now look forward to leading this gifted team of surgeons, clinicians, researchers, administrators and support staff in continuing to deliver compassionate state-of-the-art care to our patients, to educate future generations of surgeons, and to advance research in orthopaedics and musculoskeletal medicine.” Initially an engineer by training, Rodriguez received his PhD in bioengineering from the University of California at San Diego before earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program followed by an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the University of Maryland's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Rodriguez is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery. Rodriguez will succeed Mark Gebhardt, MD, who will commit more of his efforts to treating patients while continuing his research, teaching and leadership efforts at BIDMC. "We are enormously grateful for Dr. Gebhardt’s longstanding and continuing dedication and support for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery," said Alexa Kimball, MD, MPH, President and CEO of Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians. "We are excited to welcome Dr. Rodriguez into his new role, where he will continue building on this strong foundation of world-class patient care and innovation for better understanding orthopaedic and musculoskeletal issues."
