Biography

Bryan Leek, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in treating sports and upper extremity injuries, including arthroscopy and reconstruction of the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. He has a particular interest in treating shoulder injuries, performing arthroscopic and open techniques in repair and reconstruction. He performs both anatomic and reverse shoulder arthroplasty. He treats traumatic, overuse, and degenerative injuries, including arthritis of both the upper and lower extremity. Dr. Leek is trained in microscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques involving the hand and upper extremity. Dr. Leek is an associate team physician for the San Diego Padres and San Diego Seals. He is also a team physician for the UC San Diego Tritons and a physician for the California Ballet. He provides advanced surgical and medical diagnostics and procedures, including emerging technologies in cartilage restoration and regenerative medicine. He has been consistently elected a top doctor in San Diego Magazine's "Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with San Diego County Medical Society. Dr. Leek's research interests extend across the field of orthopedic surgery including biologic augmentation of tendon healing and surgical techniques. His research has been featured in peer-reviewed medical journals, including American Journal of Orthopedics, The American Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery, and The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has authored several book chapters on topics such as arthritis of the hand and upper extremity and the biology of shoulder rotator cuff healing for AANA Advanced Arthroscopy: The Shoulder, and Arthritis of the Hand and Upper Extremity: A Master Skills Publication. He has been invited to speak at local and national conferences on topics varying from therapy, surgical techniques, to the biology of rotator cuff healing. Dr. Leek was a consulting orthopedic surgeon for the San Diego State University Athletic Department. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopy at San Diego Arthroscopy Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center, and a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the C. V. Starr Hand Center (now The Roosevelt Hand to Shoulder Center) through Columbia University in New York City. Dr. Leek completed residency training in orthopedic surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine, and earned his medical degree from UC Irvine School of Medicine. He is board certified in general orthopedics. Since 2011, Dr. Leek has served as a faculty member of the San Diego Shoulder Institutes international course in shoulder arthroscopy, arthroplasty, and fractures. He is a member of several professional medical organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Arthroscopy Association of North America. When he's not working, Dr. Leek enjoys surfing, running marathons, and spending time with his wife and two children.
