Biography

Dr. Gondusky is a former Navy Commander and a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty, fellowship training in hip replacement, total knee replacement, and partial knee replacement. He has extensive training in anterior approach total hip replacement, minimally invasive surgery, computer-assisted surgery, and complex revision joint replacement. As a subspecialist in adult joint replacement, he finds it rewarding to be able to offer a patient in pain a life-changing intervention. He understands the significance of these procedures and ensures that each patient understands their condition and the options available for treatment. Dr. Gondusky grew up in Rhode Island. He attended Villanova University (PA) on an academic scholarship, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He then received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University (Bethesda, MD), graduating with Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society distinction. He then completed an internship in general surgery at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Following that he was honored to serve with the US Marines, 1st Marine Division, based in Camp Pendleton, CA. He led the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion medical department through their deployment to Iraq in 2004. He then completed orthopedic surgery residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego. From there he travelled to Okinawa, Japan. He served as a staff orthopedic surgeon, focusing on fracture care and sports orthopedics (arthroscopy) at the Navy’s busiest overseas hospital. He then returned to the U.S. for fellowship training at the Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, CA. That training focused on simple and complex hip and knee replacement, with a unique high-volume experience in anterior approach hip replacement not found at many training centers. He brought his skills to the orthopedic residency program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA. There he was an active joint replacement surgeon, research award-winner, resident educator, and assistant professor in surgery at the Uniformed Services University. He obtained the rank of Commander prior to leaving the Navy to begin practice at the Jordan-Young Institute in 2015. As a partner of the institute, he strives to maintain its impeccable local reputation for expert orthopedic care, having served the Hampton Roads community for over 30 years. He is aided by his team, consisting of a personal secretary, 2 medical assistants, scribe, Nurse Practitioner and Physician’s Assistant (affectionately known as the G-Unit). His leadership and quality outcomes have led to his distinction as a respected and awarded surgeon in the community. His patient care has distinguished him as a uniquely competent, thorough, and compassionate surgeon. He has earned nomination amongst all hospital staff for patient care awards for the last 3 years in row, making him the only orthopedic surgeon nominated. He was nominated for and serves as Co-Chair of the Operations Committee and Co-Director of the Outpatient Arthroplasty Program at the Leigh Orthopedic Surgery Center (LOSC). This ambulatory surgery center opens in 2020, and Dr. Gondusky is poised to lead that organization into the future, as the highest quality outpatient joint replacement center in southeastern VA. He operates currently at Sentara Leigh Hospital. The hospital has earned numerous distinctions for orthopedic care. It was designated the hospital system’s orthopedic magnet hospital in 2018, performing over 3,000 hip and knee arthroplasties per year. The arthroplasty outcomes for the hospital are superior locally, and on par with all major top tier U.S. facilities. In addition to his clinical work, his academic interests and consulting work keeps him at the forefront of research and education in his specialty area. Dr. Gondusky has participated in numerous regional and national educational programs focused on hip and knee arthroplasty. He has been a faculty instructor for educational courses and surgical skills training in joint replacement for residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons. He is a leading surgeon educator on knee balancing methods, use of knee balancing devices, partial knee replacement, primary and revision knee replacement, complex primary anterior approach hip arthroplasty, and conversion and revision anterior approach hip arthroplasty. Dr. Gondusky teaches medical students and mentors research efforts, serving as faculty with the role of assistant professor, at the Uniformed Services University (USU) and Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). Dr. Gondusky is an accomplished author and speaker. His research has been presented at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meetings, and published in the Journal of Arthroplasty. He also serves as an article reviewer for the Journal of Arthroplasty, Arthroplasty Today and an abstract reviewer for the annual meeting of the AAHKS. He has been appointed as a committee member for the Adult Reconstruction Hip Program, AAOS Annual Meeting, 2019-2022.
