Biography

Dr. Theodore Schlegel, a founding member of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic-Denver, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of knee and shoulder injuries. He has extensive clinical and basic science research experience in both of these areas. Dr. Schlegel helped to develop an FDA-approved technology (Opus Medical/Arthrocare) that simplified arthroscopic shoulder surgery. He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters. Currently, he focuses his research interests on evaluating effective strategies for curbing soaring healthcare delivery. For 18 years, he has served as a team physician for the Denver Broncos. During this time, he worked on several research projects focusing on injuries specific to high-level football players. As a result of this work and his participation in the education of other physicians and athletic trainers within the league, Dr. Schlegel received the prestigious "Outstanding NFL Team Physician Award". After graduating from Brown University, where he was an All American water polo player, he received his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati. He then completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at the University of Utah, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado. Dr. Schlegel is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Colorado/School of Medicine and the Fellowship Director at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic-Denver, where he participates in the education of students, residents and sports medicine fellows. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and American Shoulder and Elbow Society.
