Biography

Dr. Pensy was named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of Orthopedic Hand Surgery by Baltimore magazine in 2020. Ray Pensy, MD graduated from Johns Hopkins University, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1995 and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School, summa cum laude, in 1999. During residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, he took an interest in hand and reconstructive microsurgery. While serving in the US Air Force, Dr. Pensy was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base and deployed to Iraq in 2005. During this service, Dr. Pensy's commitment to treating severe extremity injuries strengthened. After completing a fellowship in hand and micro-vascular surgery at The Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore, Dr. Pensy returned to his alma mater to practice hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery. Currently, Dr. Pensy performs complex reconstructions of the upper extremity, including bone, nerve, vascular, and soft tissue procedures. A substantial portion of this practice is committed to limb salvage. He holds a certificate for additional qualifications in hand surgery (CAQ) and is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), and the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery (ASRM). Dr. Pensy sees patients at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and the University of Maryland Center for Hand and Upper Extremity Care. He performs outpatient procedures at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute and complex reconstructions at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
