Biography

Dr. McCarty is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, with additional board certification in orthopaedic sports medicine. He specializes in the treatment of injuries to the shoulder, elbow, and articular cartilage, including complex reconstructive techniques. His expertise includes advanced arthroscopic techniques such as rotator cuff repair and labral repair, total shoulder replacement and reverse shoulder replacement, tendon transfer and Tommy John surgery, as well as cartilage restoration techniques in the shoulder and knee such as microfracture, autologous chondrocyte transplantation, treatment of adult and juvenile OCD and meniscal transplant. After graduating magna cum laude from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, Dr. McCarty completed his orthopaedic surgical residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. Subsequently, he received advanced training in shoulder and orthopaedic sports medicine by completing a prestigious fellowship at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. McCarty graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Brown University as an undergraduate. Dr. McCarty served as an orthopaedic team physician for the Minnesota Twins Major League Baseball team from 2005-2018, and currently serves as a team physician for Totino-Grace and Minnetonka High Schools. Dr. McCarty is an active member of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association and advises the Minnesota State High School League on matters pertaining to injury prevention and arm care in baseball. He also serves as an orthopedic consultant for Macalester College, a local Division III school. As a fellow at Rush, Dr. McCarty assisted with medical care for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls, and served as one of the head team physicians for the Chicago Steele, a regional United States Hockey League team. Dr. McCarty remains academically active by routinely authoring book chapters, original research articles, and presenting at national meetings such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Conference, and the biennial meeting of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons academy. His research has been published in journals such as The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and The American Journal of Sports Medicine. Dr. McCarty has served as President/CEO of Sports and Orthopaedic Specialists and continues to serve in a number of other leadership positions in the Metro area, including as the Chair of Orthopedics for Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Outside of the office, Dr. McCarty enjoys competing in triathlons, running, music and spending time with his wife and three children. Dr. McCarty is a two - time Boston Marathon qualifier and finisher, and also qualified for and raced in the 2014 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Mt. Tremblant, Quebec. He is fluent in French and conversational Spanish.
