Biography

In 1996 he spent a period of research in the United States in New York with one of the founding fathers of knee prosthetic surgery, John N Insall with whom he published the results of the research on the influence of the posterior cruciate ligament in the stability of the total knee prosthesis knee (www.iskinstitute.com/johnninsall.html). Specialized in Orthopedics and Traumatology in 2002 with Prof Paolo Aglietti at the University of Florence where since 1994 he has deepened the study of hip and knee arthroplasty. In 2003-2004 he obtained a license to practice medicine in the state of New York and worked as a Clinical Fellow at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery (www.hss.edu) where he performed approximately 500 prosthetic implants under the mentorship of Prof Thomas Sculco of the hip and knee and received the award for the best research of the year (Philip Wilson Award) for having patented a new radiographic projection for the patella and having developed a functional score of the patella. In 2005 he obtained a Doctorate in Clinical and Pathology of Movement Organs at the University of Florence. In 2007 he won the scholarship for the prestigious Traveling Fellowship of the American Knee Society. In 2009 he participated in the foundation of the European Knee Associates of which he was on the Board as Secretary and from which the European Knee Society was born in 2014 of which he has now been President since January 2018 (www.europeankneesociety.com). He has organized numerous national and international conferences and organized the World Arthroplasty Congress in Rome in April 2018 with approximately 1000 participating surgeons specializing in hip and knee prosthetic reconstruction from all over the world (www.wac2018.org). He has published approximately 80 peer-reviewed and non-peer reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. In 2014 he published as Editor a book on the perioperative medical management of patients undergoing arthroplasty (Springer-Verlag ed). He has given 420 presentations at national and international conferences in the last 20 years. It performs approximately 800 hip and knee prosthesis implants per year, of which approximately 100 complex revision operations on failed prostheses from all over the country. He was the first to introduce and popularize the Fast-Track rapid recovery method for hip and knee prosthetic surgery in Italy ( www.sixtus.it/we-care/fast-track-una-rivoluzione-per-linterno-di-protesi- knee-and-hip ).
