Dr. Mbugua is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon certified by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board. He specializes in sports medicine with his main focus being surgical and non-surgical management of sports and exercise-related injuries. He has specialized training in ligament reconstructions of the knee, meniscus surgery, cartilage surgery, plus specialized keyhole shoulder surgery. He also has a keen interest in child orthopaedics and sports injuries in young athletes. Dr. Mbugua graduated from The University of Nairobi in December 2004 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. He proceeded for a 1-year internship at the PCEA Chogoria Hospital and thereafter moved to AIC Cure International Hospital, Kijabe. He started his orthopaedic training in 2006 at Kijabe. Having completed his training in December 2011, he graduated with a fellowship in orthopaedics from The College of Surgeons of East, Central, Southern Africa (COSECSA) as the pioneer class in Kenya. In December 2018 he graduated with a fellowship in paediatric orthopaedic surgery once again as one of the first in Kenya. He worked in AIC Cure International Hospital up until December 2018, after which he transitioned to AIC Kijabe Hospital and The Nairobi Spine and Orthopaedic Centre. In his knee and shoulder speciality training, he has had the opportunity to train under many sports surgeons, including the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox team physician, Dr Brian Cole of Rush University. He has also had the opportunity to work with different surgeons at the University of Michigan and the University of Alabama at Birmingham at different points in his career. Dr Mbugua's primary area of interest is knee and shoulder arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and he has a great passion to improve sports medicine in Kenya. He has been working with many sports teams including football and basketball teams in Kenya but most of his work has been with the Kenya Rugby Union, covering the 7-a-side and 15- a-side national teams. He has a passion for teaching and has been involved in orthopaedic training since 2012, teaching trainee surgeons, physiotherapists and other people involved in sports as a developing field in Kenya. This passion has seen him become a founding member of the Kenya Society of Sports Medicine which has organised two multi-disciplinary conferences in the last few years. Orthopaedic surgery has grown in leaps and bounds over the last 15 years in Kenya. Dr. Mbugua feels privileged to have witnessed a lot of that growth in terms of the care that can be offered to patients, and also in terms of the number of orthopaedic surgeons that have been trained. He says, “specialised orthopaedic care for our great sportsmen and women is now accessible right here within our borders and I am excited to be a small part of making this happen.”
