Dr. Bach graduated from Harvard College (’75) in Cambridge Massachusetts with a B.A. degree. While at Harvard, he played intercollegiate football and baseball, received the Jack Fadden Athletic Award, and served as a Class Marshal (Class Officer). He received his medical doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1979. Dr. Bach then completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Harvard Combined Orthopedic Surgery, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident and Trauma Service Junior Attending in 1985-86. He completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York under the direction of Russell F. Warren, M.D. in 1986. Dr. Bach is currently a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Orthopedics at Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center and Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, a post he has held since 1996. He received in 2004 the Claude Lambert-Susan Thomsen endowed professor chair of orthopaedic surgery. Since 1988, he has also been the Fellowship Director for Orthopedic Sports Medicine at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center, where he previously served as the Fellowship Director for Primary Care Sports Medicine (1988-93) and Director of the Sports Medicine Section (Adjunct Attending and Assistant Professor, 1986-93). Dr. Bach has written over 800 peer reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, abstracts, and has guest edited multiple monographs. He has delivered over 500 presentations to local, national, and international audiences. An avid educator, Dr. Bach has been a faculty instructor at the learning Resource Center in Rosemont for the AAOS, AANA, and AOSSM for nearly 40 CME courses. Dr. Bach was the recipient of a Special Recognition Award from the AOSSM for leadership and education and for establishing the Herklotz challenge (1999) which established a research endowment for the organization. In 1995 Dr. Bach was into the Illinois Athletic Trainers’ Hall of Fame (1995). Additionally, he has been listed in The Best Doctors in America—Midwest Region, in Chicago Magazine as one of Chicagoland’s Best Doctors, in How to Find the Best Doctors—Chicago Metropolitan Area; in Who's Who in Executives and Businesses, and in Strathmore's Who's Who.. In 2003, Drs. Bach and Drez collaborated and coedited “Pocketsportsmedicine” a PDA format text directed to medical students, residents, and primary care physicians. He has been the guest editor for Techniques in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Review, and Operative Techniques in Sports Medicine Dr. Bach has served on many Editorial Boards: Bone & Joint Diseases-Index & Reviews; Sports Medicine Digest; the Journal Bone & Joint Surgery; and Orthopedics Today. He has also served on the Editorial Review Boards for: the American Journal of Knee Surgery; the Journal of the National Strength and Conditioning Association; Advances in Orthopaedic Surgery; the American Journal of Sports Medicine; and the Physician and Sports Medicine. He became the editor of the Journal of Knee Surgery in 2003. Dr. Bach has been a team physician or consultant for many athletic teams and organizations. Currently he is one of the Midwest Orthopaedic physicians appointed as a team orthopaedist for the Chicago White Sox, as well as the Chicago Bulls. He serves as the medical advisory physician for the Bert Bell-Pete Rozelle NFL Retirement and disability Plan. Since 1999 he has served as a consultant for the NHL. Dr. Bach has served on numerous committees within national organizations. Within the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine he has served on the publications, membership, research, council of delegates and program committees. He has served as treasurer, vice president and will be president in 2007-8. Currently Bach is president of the Herodicus Society (2005-6), an international group comprised of 90 members. The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation is another national organization that Dr. Bach has donated many hours of his time. He served as the national fundraising chairman for AOSSM, established a matching fund (the Herklotz fund) which established an endowment for the AOSSM, and has served on the Board of Directors for OREF for several years. In the early 1990’s Dr. Bach served on the board of Directors for the Illinois Special Olympics. Dr. Bach came to RUSH University Medical Center in 1986 as the Director of Sports medicine. He initiated the RUSH Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowship in 1988, and since then the sports section and fellowship program has grown to six attendings (Drs. Bach, Bush-Joseph, Romeo, Cole, Nicholson, and Verma) and currently four fellows annually. Fifty-one postgraduate fellows have been trained since 1988. Clinically Dr. Bach performs over 450 surgical procedures annually. Approximately 65% of his practice is currently devoted to disorders of the knee and 30% to shoulder disorders. Major areas of clinical experience are in knee and shoulder arthroscopy, knee ligament reconstruction (ACL, PCL, knee dislocations, revision knee ligament surgery), patellar instability surgery, and osteotomies about the knee. In the shoulder Dr Bach performs shoulder instability and rotator cuff related surgical procedures. Patients who are candidates for joint replacement surgery are directed to partners within the group as are patients with spine disorders, complex foot and ankle conditions, hand and wrist disorders, and pediatric orthopaedic conditions. Bach is especially proud that he has skilled partners who can expertly manage these types of conditions that allows Dr. Bach to focus on the knee and shoulder. He has seen the group Midwest Orthopaedics at RUSH (www.rushortho.com) grow from eight members in 1986 to currently 50 physicians. Dr. Bach married Elizabeth King Ingle in 1982 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They have two children, David (30), recently graduated from Harvard College, and Laura, (27). Dr. Bach enjoys woodworking, gardening, antiques and several outdoor interests include fly fishing, whitewater rafting, and skeet shooting. Dr. Bach also enjoys glassblowing. If there are any legacies to leave it is the attempt to achieve a balanced life personally and professionally, recognize that my Elizabeth and my children are my “treasures” and greatest “achievements”, that my Herodicus friends are my extended family, and that I have hopefully impacted many athletes and their care by my research and educational efforts.
