Dr. Lynn Staheli, MD discusses the history, technique, and current indications for the shelf acetabuloplasty. He suggests the indications include very severe dysplasia in late childhood or adolescence, the desire by the surgeon and family for a good (but not excellent) procedure that is safe, simple, effective, and inexpensive -- and most importantly for Perthes disease in the child older than 8 years of age.
