Limb Sparing Resection for a Scapula Dedifferentiated Chondrosarcoma: Restoring Shoulder Stability

Plays: 0

Video Description

This video teaches the surgical steps involved in removing (resecting) a bone sarcoma called a dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma arising from the scapula (shoulder girdle). The shoulder is reconstructed in a way to provide stability by suspending the humerus from the clavicle and transferring muscles and tendons. This is a limb sparing surgery as opposed to performing an amputation called a forequarter amputation. Some patients may benefit from total scapula prosthetic reconstruction but this was not possible for this patient. When not possible, the procedure described in this video, is a reliable method for restoring stability so the hand and elbow can function.
