A reaction of the external anal sphincter muscle when the adjacent skin is briefly and briskly stimulated. A normal reflex is a contraction of the sphincter also known as anal wink. Absent anal reflex may signify; cauda equina syndrome, spinal cord lesion, or local operations. Sensation is conveyed by the pudendal nerve integrated by sacral segments S2-S4.
